THE WOMEN'S PLAY PRESS

The Play Press grew out of The Women's Play Press collective, launched in 1994 by Lorae Parry, Viv Plumb, Fiona Samuel, Cathy Downes and Jean Betts with support from Circa Theatre's Susan Wilson.

The Women's Play Press was formed initially to publish plays of ours performed in 1993 in a festival we organised to celebrate the centenary of women's suffrage in NZ. Since then, several of our plays have had excellent sales, productions nationally and abroad, and inclusion in school and university curricula.

THE SUSAN SMITH BLACKBURN PRIZE

Our association with this prize began when Jean Betts' play The Collective was chosen as a finalist in 2003/4 (submitted by BATS Theatre), and continues with another finalist spot for her play Genesis Falls in 2012/13 (submitted by Fortune Theatre).

In 2007 The Women’s Play Press was accepted as a source organisation for submissions to the prize. If you would like your play to be considered please submit an ecopy to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
